The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) is a non-governmental, non-partisan human rights organization which is registered under the Nongovernmental Organization Act of 2002. The Coalition started in 2010 as a loose network of 14 Human Rights NGOs and in 2012 THRDC was formally established as an umbrella organization and since then we have instigated and undertaken a range of human rights projects.
THRDC is comprised of both individual and organizational memberships, whereby as of April 2016 it had 115 members who are human rights defenders (including journalists). Its membership and representation in terms of operation are spread through zones’ Human Rights focal person coordination all over the United Republic of Tanzania (Mainland and Zanzibar).
THRDC works for the safety of about 6000 Human Right Defenders in Tanzania. HRDs today find themselves in an increasingly insecure operating environment, caused by both municipal and international factors that have culminated into a harsh regulatory and legal framework in Tanzania.
